Before entering politics – company director, and union organiser, Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association 1997-2003 [1]

House of Representatives since 2004, representing the Division of Watson, he was a member of cabinet under Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard and worked as a political staffer to Labor senators Graham Richardson and Michael Forshaw

Tony Burke praises the ‘bravery” of Palestinians “engaging in politics in different ways”.

He voted against the Marriage Amendment Bill 2012, citing opposition within his constituency.[2]

He supported same-sex marriage in May 2015,[3]

He voted in favour of the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017.[4] this was totally out of step with his constituents as his Federal Electoral Division had the second-highest percentage of “No” responses in the 2017 Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, with 69.64% of the electorate’s respondents to the survey responding “No”.[5]

“Sought a business visa for an Islamic scholar and hate preacher who was denied entry into Australia … Mohammed Rateb Abdalah Ali al-Nabulsi was eventually denied entry to Australia, despite the opposition frontbencher’s efforts in July last year. [6]

The Australian reported – The Voice of Islam radio station had invited Mr Nabulsi to Australia for a series of public engagements and sought the help of Mr Burke to secure his visa.” [6]

Mr Nabulsi appeared on Al-Aqsa TV — the official Hamas-run television channel — on April 28, 2011 and said among other things:

“Homosexuality leads to the destruction of the homosexual. That is why, brothers, homosexuality carries the death penalty. ….

We are extremely lucky in our countries. When the head of the [Islamic] community in Australia came to bid me farewell at the airport, he began to cry, and said: ‘Tell our brothers in Syria that the garbage heaps of Syria are better than the gardens of Australia.’ [8]

Married Cathy Bresnan in 1994; she subsequently took the surname “Bresnan-Burke”. The couple had three daughters together, but separated at the end of December 2012.

The Australian has also uncovered a batch of entitlement claims from 2009 when the then Labor frontbencher charged $48,951 for a six-day ministerial trip to Europe, including first-class flights for a senior adviser — Ms Laris.

After the trip, Ms Laris was promoted to chief of staff which would allow her to accompany Mr Burke on his domestic and overseas jaunts.

The Daily Telegraph revealed Mr Burke’s department spent more than $50,000 throwing lavish functions across the nation in his first six and a half weeks as arts minister during the final year of the Labor government. He attended these eight “stakeholder functions” in six different cities at a cost to the taxpayer of $54,312.69, not long after then prime minister Julia Gillard had announced the election date.[8]

Was the most outspoken critic of former speaker Bronwyn Bishop’s excessive spending of taxpayers’ money, ($5,000) [9] has now himself come under fire for charging taxpayers to send his family on a business class trip to Uluru in 2012 flying business class at a cost of $6500.

Burke has emerged as one of the government’s biggest groupies, charging taxpayers to travel to a Robbie Williams concert in 2014 as well as taking his children to a Justin Bieber concert in 2011.

Skye Laris (partner) joined GetUp! in March 2011

Skye Laris is now an executive member of AGL Energy managing director Andy Vesey’s team as he sticks with the company’s plan to shut down the Liddell power station in the NSW Hunter Valley, despite protests the planned closure threatens energy supplies. [10, 11]
